Women Health Issues: An Outlook
"Being a woman is hard." Many people speak about it, but very few address it. How many times have you mumbled this to yourself when something you have no control over goes wrong? How many times has someone pinned you down by saying, "You're a woman, it's not your cup of tea."?
While both men and women face innumerable challenges in their daily lives, women have to undergo a few extra miles to reach par with men. They endure many blockades in every aspect of life, especially health.
Everyone contracts various diseases in his/her lifetime, but some health issues affect women differently and more seriously. Women experience exclusive health concerns like breast cancer, PCOS, PCOD, cervical and ovarian cancer, menopause, hormonal imbalance, and so on. Women suffer a higher rate of heart disease and death as compared to men. Depression and anxiety exhibit more frequently among female patients. These illnesses profess substantial health risks to women of all age groups. Besides, most drug trials do not include female test subjects, which tend to leave women's health conditions undiagnosed.
Let's talk about some serious health concerns which affect women differently and more grievously. Some of them are-
Heart Diseases
While heart diseases affect both men and women equally, the warning signs and the severity might differ in women. Many women show evident signs of heart disease before a cardiac arrest, but women generally brush off these symptoms as they do not have the time to be sick. Women are considered the caretakers of the family. They are expected to be healthy and fit all the time to cater to their family's needs first. This is where the problem begins. Very evident signs of heart diseases in women like nausea, jaw pain, gastrointestinal issues are often neglected by many women, leading to heart failure.
Gynaecological Cancers
Gynecologic cancer affects the female reproductive organs, including Ovarian Cancer, Cervical Cancer, Vaginal Cancer, Vulvar Cancer and Uterine Cancer. Almost 120,000 women are affected by Ovarian and Cervical cancer every year in India. Due to the absence of cancer recognition in developing countries like India, many women report cancers at advanced stages, massively influencing the clinical outcome.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome(PCOS/PCOD)
It is a condition where a woman's ovaries or the adrenal glands produce a higher than normal amount of male hormones. The word "polycystic" means "many cysts". In a person with this condition, the ovaries enlarge as they release many small fluid-filled sacs containing eggs called cysts. The most common symptoms of PCOS/PCOD are irregular menstrual cycle, cysts in the ovaries, hair growth on the face, chest, stomach and thighs, weight gain, acne, darkening of the skin, etc. According to a study, PCOS/PCOD affects almost 27% of women in their growing years, and more than 70% of these women go undiagnosed.
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder(PMDD)
We are well aware of the term PMS, but what does PMDD mean? It is an extended and more severe form of PMS that affects women before their menstrual cycle begins. Around 30% of women face mild to severe premenstrual symptoms(PMS) before their menstrual cycle, and approximately 4% out of these women experience acute symptoms preventing them from functioning normally. It is a chronic condition that requires medical treatment. Common symptoms include severe anxiety, depression, mood changes, irritability, heart palpitations, excessive crying and emotional instability, headaches, gastrointestinal problems, muscle spasms, etc. It is more common in women with a history of clinical depression or anxiety.
Breast Cancer
Breast Cancer is the most common type of cancer in women. Approximately half a million women die of breast cancer every year! While there is a lot of treatment for breast cancer, most women choose to ignore the early signs due to the fear of being diagnosed with it. The majority of these deaths occur in underdeveloped or developing countries where the treatment and prevention of such issues are almost non-existent.
Uterine Fibroids
Fibroids are non-cancerous tumours made of muscle mass and other tissues that develop in and around the uterus and ovaries. Most women exhibit symptoms of heavy or painful menstruation, frequent urination, painful sex, infertility, etc; due to this condition, whereas some women show no signs at all.
...and the list continues.
